There is a customary greeting on St. David's Day: Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! This means “Happy St. David's Day!” and it's pronounced DEE-the goo-eel Dew-ee happ-iss.

Does Wales get a day off?

Sadly, March 1st isn’t an official bank holiday in Wales, so we still have to work. But we don’t let that get in the way. Never one to ignore the chance to party, you’ll find schools, workplaces, and communities celebrating anyway, and have a proper Welsh party.

Why do we wear daffodils on St. David's Day?

Daffodils are used for St David's Day because daffodils are one of the Welsh national emblems.

St David's Day Celebrations. Traditionally known as the “feast day of Saint David”, March 1st has been a day of celebration in Wales since the 12th century, and as well as St David as his achievements, it's a day to honour Wales as a whole.

Why is the leek a Welsh symbol?   Legend has it that St David ordered his soldiers to wear leeks on their helmets during a battle against the Saxons during the sixth century.

St David was one of the earliest vegetarians. He didn’t eat meat and ate only herbs, vegetables and bread.

St David (Dewi Sant) is the patron saint of Wales, born on the southwest coast of Wales, not far from where the city of St Davids is today.
