This is a 1 day course for Raft Guides or Trainee Raft Guides aimed at facilitating the inclusion of people with disabilities in white water rafting.
Disability inclusion is about more than merely allowing people with disabilities to be present, it is about active and meaningful participation This course will consider the whole rafting experience from end to end and explore issues surrounding the functional requirements of participants with a range of additional support needs; sensory, emotional, and physical.
The course will provide theory and practical training in encouraging a higher quality participation for whitewater rafters with additional needs. Learners will gain knowledge of how participants with visible or invisible disabilities, can be offered equal opportunities to succeed, to experience, and to be accommodated fairly.
The principles of safe moving and handling will be considered, and consideration will also be given to balancing the level of perceived risk against the measures needed to control actual risk.
True inclusion is when people with disabilities are not just present but are engaged in meaningful ways both physically and emotionally.
This is a practical course run in partnership between Equal Adventure, and the National White Water Centre.
