From the Tryweryn’s rapids to the World Stage

In June 2025, Matt Stephenson, Tryweryn raft guide, clinched the men's C1 Canoe Freestyle gold medal at the ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships in Plattling, Germany – a truly phenomenal achievement! This victory follows years of hard work, honing his skills and pushing the boundaries of what's possible in a kayak.
Here at the National White Water Centre, Canolfan Tryweryn, we're immensely proud of the incredible talent, including Matt, who train here on our challenging rapids.

He's a fantastic role model, demonstrating that with hard work and a love for the water, anything is possible.
Through
Bala Canoe Club, Matt finds opportunities to give back, volunteering his coaching skills to beginners and improvers.
Novices learn in the swimming pool over the winter then head out onto the lake and the Lower Tryweryn in the warmer summer months. The river's unique features and consistent flow make it an ideal place to practice those gravity-defying tricks and complex combinations that Matt loves so much!

Interview with Matt Stephenson, Freestyle World Champion
Did you ever imagine you would be a world champion?
“No, I can safely say I'd never set my sights on that! I'd been runner up plenty of times. I never thought I'd win but it's been great!”
Looking at you now, that's hard to believe. You look like you've kayaked all your life. How did you get into the sport?
“I was around 11 years old and I went to my local canoe club. Canoe clubs are great. Whether you have an outdoorsy family like mine - we were always doing nice things outdoors - or whether you’re not so lucky as to have such opportunities, canoe clubs can help get people out on the water. They're all over the country and are staffed by fantastic volunteers who are willing to offer their time coaching. All the kit is available to borrow and it's an inexpensive way to access kayaking for the first time. It was a great start for me!”
So when did you first make it to the Tryweryn?
“I was 14 or 15 years old, I think. I loved it straight away; this beautiful river with such excellent clean whitewater running through a lovely forest. It was idyllic! The Tryweryn is home to a wonderful community of paddlers and when I'm here I get to see all my lovely friends and go paddling with them! It makes me so happy!”
