Kingfishers on the Tryweryn

If you want a chance to see more of the Tryweryn’s wildlife, you can book onto our Raft Safari trip.

Dorlan in Welsh means hollow river bed and glas means blue, so Glas y Dorlan literally translates as Blue of the Riverbank. These tiny birds nest in sandy burrows along the riverbank, making their Welsh name somewhat fitting.

We are glad we see more kingfishers on the Tryweryn these days. However, given they are so sensitive to cold weather, a particularly harsh winter can seriously reduce their population, so we’ll not count our chicks quite yet!

If you want a chance to see more of the Tryweryn’s wildlife, you can book onto our Raft Safari trip. It’s a gentler pace on the Lower Tryweryn and it allows rafters more time to enjoy the scenery.

(The Ultimate and Rapid Sessions are faster paced trips that allow little time between rapids to notice nature!)

We recommend you aim to book your Safari trip for Springtime or beyond.

In the meantime the Tryweryn Trail is open to walkers, we are still taking groups Canyoning and Manon’s Riverside Cafe offers seating right by the river.
