BRITISH CANOEING RIVER RAFT GUIDE AWARD

If you love being on the river, being a raft guide is the perfect job for you! In order to become a raft guide at the centre you will need to:
  • attend a British Canoeing (BC) River Raft Guide training course
  • log necessary post training experience
  • be assessed for the BC River Raft Guide Award.

BC RIVER RAFT GUIDE AWARD TRAINING COURSE

POST TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Upon completion of your training course, you will need to gain sufficient experience before taking your assessment. 

There are opportunities to join training rafts with other trainees as well as accompanying a qualified raft guide on commercial trips. 

You will need to have logged a minimum of 20 hours raft guiding experience for the restricted award (which allows you to guide at the centre).

ASSESSMENT INFORMATION (RESTRICTED AWARD)

Assessments for the BC River Raft Guide Award are arranged on demand. The assessment is at least 3 hours (2 hours guiding and 1 hour ropework). In order to take the assessment you must have:
  • Home Nation membership (Canoe Wales, British Canoeing etc)
  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Attended a BC River Raft Guide training course (unless you hold the Stadium Raft Guide Award)
  • Current First Aid certificate (16 hours) with CPR
  • Valid Advanced White Water Safety & Rescue OR Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician Pro qualification (you can use Accredited Prior Leaning towards this with supporting evidence and recommendation by a Level 4 or 5 raft guide)
  • Completed a Leader Registration (LR) Form with your Home Nation.

SAFETY & RESCUE COURSES

The National White Water Centre is the premier centre for paddlesport safety & rescue training.
Our facilities include:
  • modern classrooms
  • changing rooms & showers

  • use of white water specific buoyancy aids
  • dry suits available for hire (£25pp)
  • NWWC facility fees included 
  • drying room for equipment 
  • current, top level coaches.

BC WHITE WATER SAFETY & RESCUE

This two day course is aimed at confident grade 2 white water paddlers and aims to provide knowledge and techniques to help keep you safe on the water and to equip you with appropriate skills should you end up in a rescue situation.

  • Price: £160 per person (group rate: 6-12 people £140 per person)
  • Minimum age: 16 years old 
  • Duration: 2 days

BC ADVANCED WHITE WATER SAFETY & RESCUE

This intense 2 day course is designed for confident grade 3 kayakers and aims to equip participants with more advanced rescue techniques for use in more challenging white water rescue situations. It will develop the principles learnt in the WWSR and consider the application of these skills in a more advanced white water environment.

RESCUE 3 WHITE WATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN PRO (WRT-PRO)

This course is designed for professional river users with existing white water experience. The aim is to equip students with the skills they need to affect rescues in white water situations at a professional level. This course complements the content of the BC scheme, significantly exceeding the content of the basic BC White Water Safety & Rescue. Tried the BC courses? Extend your knowledge with the professional standard in water safety.
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
  • Price: £290 per person
  • Minimum age: 18 years old 
  • Duration: 3 days
  • Prerequisites: Confident swimmer with experience of either rafts, canoes, kayaks or sea level traversing.

RESCUE 3 WHITE WATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN ADVANCED (WRTA)

This 4 day course is the next step from the Whitewater Rescue Technician course, it will develop your skills further and is designed for outdoor professionals working in challenging environments. The main focus is on solutions to rescue scenarios, incident management and effective use of safety equipment.

FIRST AID

OUTDOOR SPECIFIC HSE FIRST AID AT WORK COURSE
The National White Water Centre run an annual Remote Emergency Care, First Aid at Work course which runs over 3 days and is tailored to suit people who work in the outdoors. This course is much requested by our own raft guides. Its very interactive and involves makeup, fake injuries and smoke bombs - its as much fun as first aid can be!

All coaching at the National White Water Centre is bespoke and by request, whether you’re after some guiding or private tuition to improve your skills, we can tailor the day to suit your needs and allow you to get the most out of your session.
